Health Global Issue

In the second entry I want to talk about  the different policies and measures taken by three countries regarding this health global issue and how it affects me and my family’s experience. Those countries are Canada, Ecuador and Colombia.

The first country is Canada, the measures taken by the government affected my family because my brothers wanted to travel there and study an english program for at least 6 months, but due to the pandemic everything was cancelled. Some of the measures and politics taken by the country according to the government were:

  1. Bar foreign nationals from all countries except the United States from entering Canada. The measure would not apply in designated exceptional circumstances, including to air crews, travellers arriving in Canada in transit to a third country, Canadian permanent residents, diplomats, or immediate family members of Canadian citizens.

  2. People must be studying at one of the approved DLIs to be able to travel to Canada. If their DLI isn’t included, they can’t travel to Canada to study at this time.

  3. Help Canadians make informed decisions and take action to protect their health and their communities by providing $50 million to support the Public Health Agency of Canada’s COVID-19 communications.

  4. Any person who intends to enter Canada must have a quarantine plan for 14 days when they arrive in the country, including: accommodation, transportation to the destination, obtaining food, essential services and medical care. This plan is mandatory, even if you have no symptoms.

Another country that affected both me and my father was Ecuador. It affected me because I had planned a trip to visit my friends and to baptize the child who will be my godson. On the other hand, the airport closure measures, the cancellation of surgeries and teleworking affected sales in my father's company, since they offer surgical products and all these procedures were disabled.

  1. The working day and classes were suspended, in addition, the government ratified ‘distancing’ measures, social events were suspended. The prohibition of international and interprovincial passenger transport was maintained. Likewise, the movement of people between provinces was prohibited.

  1. In order to guarantee the health of workers and public servants, during the health emergency the Ecuadorian government declared the implementation of teleworking for both companies and organizations of the public sector and for the private sector.

  2. Only emergent surgeries were attended, that is, vital emergencies with care in less than an hour. Also urgent surgeries were attended, which are life threatening and require attention in less than 24 hours.

Finally, I want to talk about how the Colombian measures affected both me and my family. As we have all experienced it, we had to go from face-to-face to virtuality in just one second; both my brothers, my father and I began to study and work from home. Everything became more difficult, we had to remain patient and calm by being together all day, trying not to fight, to agree to do something, to take turns doing some things. They assimilated it faster than I did, since they weren't used to going out every weekend. For me it was very complicated, at one point I thought I could go crazy, I couldn't stop crying, I couldn't find what to do at home, but as time went by, everything got better.

The national mandatory preventive isolation began on March 25. That day it was reported on the implementation of rapid tests in the country, with prevention, diagnosis and treatment of covid-19. And after that they started implementing some measures:

  1. The enabling of new hospital spaces in the country, the optimization of intensive care and intermediate care units, and the regulation of direct transfers of resources by the National Government and territorial entities. Telehealth is put into use in Colombia, strengthens protection measures and economic recognition for human talent in health.
  2. The Colombian government ordered mandatory preventive isolation for all inhabitants. Free limited movement of people and vehicles in the national territory with some specific exceptions, for example: assistance and provision of health services and acquisition of basic needs.
  3. Since March 16, all public and private education institutions in the country suspended face-to-face classes, so that children and young people remain in their homes in preventive isolation, with the support of their families.
  4. The Colombian government recommended authorizing teleworking or work at home without this implying abandonment of the position. Each employer was responsible for adopting the actions to that effect and it was the worker's responsibility to comply with this measure in order for it to be effective, in terms of mandatory preventive isolation.
Finally, it is important to continue taking care of ourselves, taking care of our families and supporting our economy so that all of us as a country can move forward and overcome this situation.
