Good news amid the chaos

Imagen
Honestly, among so many bad news, so many bad times what we are going through, an environment so heavy for our mental health, I wanted to look for some good news that is happening around the world to clear my mind of everything that is happening in Colombia. The first good news is related to the covid vaccine, I saw that both the European Union and the United States are willing to analyze patent freedom. (EPA, 20201) The United States and other countries had previously blocked WTO negotiations proposed by India and South Africa to help developing countries use the intellectual property rights of pharmaceutical companies to produce their own vaccines. Now that there are countries that have been privileged with the amount of vaccines they buy or produce, they realize that vaccination against covid-19 is one of the most important tools to fight the effects of the pandemic. This is why the European Commission expressed its willingness to discuss any proposal to deal with the health crisis ...

Gender Equality

Imagen
One of the sustainable development goals, specifically the number 5,  talks about gender equality and that's the topic that I chose for this entry. Let's start by talking about the situation in our country; according to the UN in recent decades, Colombia has made important achievements in promoting gender equality and empowering women, although there is still a need to close related gaps. Colombia has ratified all current international treaties on human rights and women's rights, and has made significant progress in the enactment of laws to promote gender equality and protect the human rights of women. According to the 2018 “Censo Nacional de Población y Vivienda”, Colombia has a population of 14.2 million households, of which around 6 million are women (40.7%) as heads of household. In the last ten years, the labor force participation of men and women has increased. In women, this proportion increased from 50% in 2009 to 53% in 2019, while among men, it increased from 73...

Unemployment caused by covid 19

Imagen
The pandemic caused by covid-19 came along with many factors including unemployment and this produces a chain of consequences on welfare, public health and the economy. In Colombia according to  "DANE" 3.79 million people were unemployed and only until June 2020, 195 million jobs were lost worldwide according to the BBC. The situation we are experiencing implies great challenges for some people more than others, for example unemployment in Colombia brings with it a great gender problem. For November 2020 for every man who lost his job 2.2 women did so and it is also important to emphasize that it is more difficult for women to get and keep a job compared to a man (Morales, 2020). On the other hand, it is important to point out that the most affected population is usually the one with the lowest educational level, those who live in small municipalities and are mostly young, and may be more likely to move from a formal job to an informal one and can remain trapped there even if...

Health Global Issue

Imagen
In the second entry I want to talk about  the different policies and measures taken by three countries regarding this health global issue and how it affects me and my family’s experience. Those countries are Canada, Ecuador and Colombia.  The first country is Canada, the measures taken by the government affected my family because my brothers wanted to travel there and study an english program for at least 6 months, but due to the pandemic everything was cancelled.  Some of the measures and politics taken by the country according to the government were:   Bar foreign nationals from all countries except the United States from entering Canada. The measure would not apply in designated exceptional circumstances, including to air crews, travellers arriving in Canada in transit to a third country, Canadian permanent residents, diplomats, or immediate family members of Canadian citizens. People must be studying at one of the approved DLIs to be able to travel to Canada. If ...

We as women

Imagen
Now that we are in the women's week and we only hear congratulations or comments on this day, I would like to make the first entry in this blog about us women. In one class the teacher asked us what was the best thing about being a woman and I honestly thought for a long time before answering because almost everything that goes through my head are bad things and I think it would be easier to answer the question of what is the worst thing about being a woman. Just this weekend I met with some friends from school and one of them was telling us the terrible story she went through. Last December while she was riding in an Uber, the driver drugged her and fortunately she managed to get out of the car and ask for help, but we were thinking about the number of women who go through the situation and are not as lucky as she were. Now talking about data on a global scale, I found that 35 percent of women have ever experienced physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner, or sexual vi...
